What is Restorative Dental Care?

Restorative dental care involves many different dental procedures that will help you regain the full functionality of your teeth. Put simply, restorative dental care treatments will help you replace missing teeth and fix damaged teeth.

You may need restorative dental care if you have tooth decay, broken or chipped teeth, or missing teeth.

Common Types of Restorative Dental Care

Fillings

This is the most common type of restorative dental care. If you develop a cavity due to tooth decay, your dentist can treat this problem by filling the gap with gold, silver amalgam, or tooth-colored plastic/glass materials called composite resin fillings. If a cavity is left untreated, you may run into complications such as:

  • Pain
  • Tooth abscess
  • Swelling or pus around a tooth
  • Damaged or broken teeth
  • Chewing problems
  • Positioning shifts of teeth after tooth loss

Dental crowns are used to restore damaged teeth without having to completely replace them. A crown, or cap, is a hollow, artificial tooth that is used to cover a damaged or decaying tooth. Crowns can protect the affected teeth from receiving further damage. Crowns can also be used to cover up discoloured or misshapen teeth to improve your comfort.

Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth, sometimes in combination with the use of dental implants. A bridge extends across an area of your mouth that does not have any teeth and is usually made from an artificial tooth being fused between 2 crowns. A dental bridge is typically held in place by the natural teeth directly beside the area where your tooth is missing, or by artificial teeth held in by dental implants.

Dental implants are artificial roots, typically made of titanium, that are inserted into the jawbone to replace the root of a natural tooth. These artificial roots are used to hold an artificial tooth in place. Dental implants and the accompanying artificial teeth are designed to look as natural as possible and feel comfortable in your mouth.

Clean Teeth Mean Less to Restore

The best way to prevent having to get restorative dental care is to properly clean and take care of your teeth. Brushing and flossing at home are integral to a healthy mouth, and you should pay close attention to your daily oral hygiene habits and look for areas that you can improve.

Having regular checkups and cleanings at Upper Gage Dental Centre will help you build good oral hygiene habits. Our team of dental professionals is always willing to discuss ways to improve your daily dental routine.
